COMPARING BUILDING QUOTES: ARE YOU COMPARING APPLES WITH APPLES?

COMPARING BUILDING QUOTES: ARE YOU COMPARING APPLES WITH APPLES?

When looking to build your new home it pays to shop around. Though we love the notion of DRHomes being the client’s first and only choice for a home builder, in reality we know that most buyers will get a quote from a few different builders to get the best possible deal. After all, chasing the best price is human nature.

(Sooooo, we’re totally cool if you want to just choose us though. We’re just over here acting really cool until you finish reading the article….)

While price may be a big driving force for your decision, a low price point could be a sign that your new home quote has not included everything you think it should have.

At DRHomes, we include as standard many of the things that some builders would call upgrades. Our standard price includes everything that finishes off a home like floor coverings, window blinds, air conditioning and even flyscreens. Basically, if you were to build a DRHomes’ home design today, you wouldn’t need to make any more adjustments or upgrades to move into it tomorrow.

Shop around – by all means, we encourage it. But when you do, make sure you are well-informed of what you are getting for your quoted price – ensure you are comparing apples with apples.

Some builders may not provide you with all the expenses upfront, and the many items that are inclusive at DRHomes, may not be inclusive with another builder.

The best way to compare, is to know exactly what DRHomes includes in the standard price of a home and to ask other builder’s if they include these items. This will help to give you a better comparison of price, and what is classed as a standard item in your home or as an upgrade.

Here’s a breakdown of just some of our Urban Single Storey inclusions. To see the full list of inclusions for our homes click here.

  • 2590mm ceiling height (2440mm to first floor on double storey homes)
  • Epoxy floor finish to garage floor
  • Roller blinds to all windows, sliding glass doors & sidelights
  • 20mm Caesarstone benchtops to kitchen
  • Reverse cycle split system air conditioning to living area
  • Glazed porcelain floor tiles
  • Carpets with 11mm underlay to bedrooms, study and media rooms
  • Non-slip tiles on concrete base to alfresco/patio and front portico
  • LED white downlights throughout entire home
  • Colorbond roof
  • Flyscreens to opening windows & sliding doors
  • Stainless steel 900mm appliances

And that’s just the beginning!

It seems a lot to remember; therefore, we have created some handy comparison sheets to take with you to other builders. Be sure to ask your Home Coach for a comparison sheet.

In a nutshell, the best thing you can do is make yourself aware of these factors and go with a builder who is going to be as transparent as possible.
